Music @ HRHS
MUSIC @ HRHS :)
Music is a fundamental and vital aspect of our everyday lives. Many of us listen to music as soon as we wake up in the mornings (or in the afternoon), when we travel from place to place and even when we're just about to fall asleep. We use music to set the mood, to calm our agitated minds, to express our emotions, to keep ourselves company, or to simply drown out the dullness of silence. Having a music education therefore is important in our understanding and appreciating music and how it works. Not only that, it also develops our overall aesthetic skills, intelligence, expression, communication skills, creative skills, etc... The benefits of studying music are priceless.
A few words...
Teaching music at Harlem Renaissance High School is truly a rewarding experience! Currently, the music program focuses on both a piano and a vocal curriculum with an emphasis on music theory and performance. The vision of the program is to teach and instill in all of our students the freedom to perform, discuss, and analyze music with confidence. Furthermore, our students are also exposed to field trips and projects that allow them to appreciate the plethora of cultural music in NYC. They are also provided with ample opportunities to share their musical talents in a supportive environment such as high school performances and off-site school performances. The primary focus of our program is to teach students to have the confidence in their ability and to express themselves creatively through music. With this confidence they learn to appreciate the aesthetic qualities that come with studying and performing music. Not only does having a music program encourage students to be creative with the abstract but it also serves as a supplement to their cognitive, emotional, and artistic needs. It goes without saying that music is simply a vital part of our everyday lives and a way for HRHS educators to create a bridge into the lives of our students.
“Music expresses that which cannot be said and which it is impossible to be silent.” --Victor Hugo “Without music, life would be an error.” -- Friedrich Nietzsche
